Mr. Simmons began his journey at Quality Center for Rehabilitation and Healing arriving from Vanderbilt University Hospital. Mr. Simmons was admitted to the hospital when he became very sick. He became very weak and was unable to walk. After many tests and treatments, the doctors diagnosed Mr. Simmons with Mars Disease or known as MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome), which is a severe pneumonia-like respiratory disease caused by a virus. It is different from SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) because MERS is caused by another subtype of the coronavirus. Pneumonia is a general term for an inflammation of the air sacs of the lungs caused by an infection or chemical. The disease took over his body, leaving the doctors no choice but to opt for surgery. After recovering from surgery, Mr. Simmons was set up to admit to Quality Center for rehabilitation and care.

Upon arrival to Quality Center, he was greeted by all of our staff to make sure his transition went smoothly. He arrived in a lot of pain and was very upset, but everyone at the community communicated with Mr. Simmons to make sure they provided the tailored care he needed to feel better and begin therapy. After his physical therapy evaluation, he was pleased to find out that the team was confident in his potential of a full recovery!

During Mr. Simmons’ stay at Quality, he made a huge impact on so many people. He enjoyed the freedom to go outside and be able to move freely in the community. His biggest goal was to be able to walk again.

During his final two months here, Mr. Simmons began working with Randy, one of our physical therapists. During his time with Randy, successful outcomes such as walking again were in sight. After a lot of hard work, Mr. Simmons is now walking with a walker for a short amount of time, but it truly is a huge accomplishment. Mr. Simmons was discouraged at first because he wanted to be able to walk without a walker, but after communication with our physical therapy team, he understands that with continued drive and confidence, he will meet and exceed his goals!

The team is very excited to continue working with him and support his recovery journey!
